"Religion, which the whole of man adjusting himself to the whole of life, involves precisely these two elements - poetic insight and moral vigor." -- Reinhold Niebuhr
Reinhold Niebuhr is a political scientist tha t writes a great deal about religion in an economic and political world. He does not focus on the theology of Christianity, but on the effects of Christianity in the modern world. He does not argue truths and non-truths, fact and fiction. Instead, he relates relationships, creates harmony between the different facets of life: "The whole of man adjusting himself to the whole of life...". Thus religion becomes the ocean through which man navigates. Some go one way and others another, but everyone has his/her place in the water. The current has led me to ask a series of questions: Why has the Bible become what it is today? Why have millions of people based their lives on it? Why have thousands of churches adopted its teachings?
To answer these questions I will first examine closely the words of the Bible. Fore the truth lies in the original words and stories. Secondly, I will consult a number of experts on the subject, summarizing and narrating what they have to say and applying it to the questions at hand. Finally, I will rely on feedback and conversation from my audience. This is an ongoing debate that can only be enhanced by open and free conversation between people. Through these methods I hope to eventually to come so some conclusions about the Bible, Christianity, and religion as a whole.
